The Maze Runner: "It's Giving Hunger Games" (A Comparative Review)

Maze Runner: It’s Giving Hunger Games

By Brielle Hamilton

Maze Runner, and Hunger Games, are both books that can’t be described in words. Only by reading the books, do you get a real taste of the works of art these books are. The Hunger Games, a fantasy novel by Suzanne Collins, and Maze Runner, a fantasy novel by James Dashner, are similar. Both involve teens, drama, an evil government, arenas, violence, and some sort of love triangle. The Maze Runner and Hunger Games books are similar to each other in many ways.

One of the many ways they are the same are their themes. The themes of betrayal,  romance, and evil are all found in these series. Both the main characters suffer betrayal from close friends. Katniss experiences a betrayal from Peeta, and Tomas, Teresa. What makes the betrayal worse is that they were both in love with the traitors. Also another similarity is that the betrayal was forced upon them by the government.

Another way they are similar is their genre. Both are fantasy and dystopian fiction novels, revolving around a broken world which the characters need to fix. Though the Maze Runner takes more of an apocalyptic approach, while Hunger Games takes a more futuristic approach, both take place in a broken world. Genres like this are often found in young adult novels.

And finally, here are some ways that they are different. First of all, both books have different levels of romance. Hunger games is more intense with its love triangle, making it a very big part of the plot. While Maze Runner takes a more subtle approach and lessens its importance in favor of more action. Another thing different is their reason for fighting back. While both series’ main characters are doing it to save the world, they also have their personal reasons. Katniss is doing it for her family and her “cousin” Gale, while Tomas is doing it for his friends. Despite all this the Maze Runner and Hunger Games are similar.
