Kirkus Reviews Best Middle Grade Books of 2020

Many book reviewers will focus on what is positive about the book so you really have to read between the lines of their review to try to figure out if the book is actually good.  Kirkus is the book review source librarians use when we want someone to tell it to us straight.  Their reviewers can be brutally honest.  So when Kirkus gives a book a star or puts it on a  Best Of List, you know it's amazing.  Check out this list of the 100 Best Middle Grade Books from Kirkus!  This is a mix of fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels.

By the way, the publishing industry defines middle grade differently depending upon the publisher.  Generally, the term "middle grade" falls into three categories:  

1.  Recommended for ages 10-14

2.  Recommended for grades 4-7

3.  Recommended for grades 5-8/9.  

Don't let the name "middle grade" fool you into thinking these books are for younger kids. Some middle grade books are intense and great reads for any age but especially middle and high school readers (even adults!).  And this year, you'll find a lot of books in this category tackle some really tough topics making them lean more toward the older end of the suggested age range or even crossing over into the Teen section in some libraries.
